COURSE OVERVIEW

The course will assist participants to extend and enrich their repertoire of communication skills for challenging work situations.

COURSE CONTENT

The course provides training in the skills required to deal with a range of challenging situations, for example:

• dealing with a conflict or dispute
• persuading or motivating someone who is resistant
• giving feedback about unsatisfactory work performance
• standing up for oneself in the face of pressure
• responding to put-downs, anger or aggression
• communicating with someone perceived as difficult or unreceptive. The particular difficulties and challenges addressed will depend on the learning goals of participants.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

As a result of the course, participants should be able to:

• understand some key models and theories of communication
• design effective communication strategies and processes
• set the stage for successful communication - building rapport, ensuring receptivity, clarifying purposes and setting the agenda
• match communication content and process to the audience
• communicate information, ideas and concerns powerfully without disempowering others
• listen effectively
• manage conflicts of interest, perception or opinion
• deal with defensive responses, games, resistances and hidden agendas
• ensure that self-sabotaging thoughts, feelings and defensive responses do not undermine one’s own confidence and effectiveness as a communicator.

The emphasis throughout the course will be on building on the natural strengths of participants, and developing flexibility of response to a variety of situations.

Those who wish to further develop their communication skills, and improve their capacity to communicate constructively and effectively with others.
